The fourth in the Pax Arcana series by Elliott James, In Shining Armor follows werewolf and sort-of-ex-knight John Charming as he tries to rescue his goddaughter Constance.

1—The Worldbuilding Continues

We delve deeper into the politics, particularly inter-Templar politics, and the politics between the Round Table—John’s werewolf pack—and the Templars. And of course as the person these two worlds intersect in, a lot of the pressure falls on John to fix things before they blow up.

We also get to meet some new monsters, particularly the dalaketnon, extra-dimensional beings who steal people from our world, and a banshee. And skinwalkers. Lots of skinwalkers.

2—Old Friends

The head of the Knight’s Templar is back and just as manipulative as ever. We also get to meet his fixer, Simon. Tula is back, as she’s one of Constance’s guardians, and so is Virgil. We get to meet an old nix friend of John’s too, and a rusalka.

Conclusion

We get to see John be clever, and stupid, and both more careful and more reckless than he normally is. There’s just so much to love about this book and I don’t want to spoil it all, so I won’t. Suffice to say, if you liked the other books, you’ll like this one too.
